The Chemical Education Division Serves Students

Reg Friesen Award - Have you thought about sharing your experiences as an undergraduate or graduate student or teaching assistant at the annual CSC or CSChE conference?  The Chemical Education Division now offers the Reg Friesen Award each year for the best papers presented by graduate or undergraduate student at the chemical education sessions at both the annual CSC and CSChE conferences.

Undergraduate Chemistry, Engineering and Technology Students - At many universities, university colleges, community colleges, CEGEPs and Technical Institutes throughout Canada you can network with other students and future employers by joining a student chapter of the CSC, CSChE or CSCT. Present the results of your undergraduate research at a regional chemistry conference, held every year.  Find out about student chapters, awards and conferences.

Undergraduate Student Poster Competition - An undergraduate student poster session is organized by the Chemical Education Division at the annual Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference. Student posters on research in all branches of chemistry are eligible. Up to (3) first place cash prizes of $200 and up to (3) honorable mention prizes of $50 are awarded each year. Submissions should report on research to which the student has made a substantial contribution while an undergraduate. Presentations may be based on Summer research in university, government, or industrial laboratories, or on research done as a part of an undergraduate chemistry program. Chemical technology students are encouraged to submit posters on senior academic or coop work projects. Abstracts should be submitted on the standard CSC form and in camera-ready format.  Please note that there is a special (later!) abstract deadline for this competition than for other CSC conference papers. The abstract should be accompanied by a brief letter of nomination from the research supervisor or other individual familiar with the student's participation in the work.

Student Travel Award - One (1) award [valued at $200 in 2004 and 2005] will be available for participants at each of (a) the annual Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) Conference and (b) the annual Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) Conference. The award will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student in chemistry, chemical engineering, or chemical technology, who is making an oral presentation at a CSC or CSChE Conference in a symposium organized by the Chemical Education Division (CED) for that conference. Students are encouraged to present papers pertaining to their experiences as an undergraduate student as it relates to an educational aspect of their chemistry, chemical engineering, or chemical technology studies. The application deadline is normally April 20 of each year for the CSC conference and August 20 of each year for the CSChE Conference. All applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Chemical Education Division, Noel George

Are you Organizing a Regional Chemistry Undergraduate Student Conference? A $200 award may be available for your organizing committee to award to an undergraduate student giving an oral or poster presentation as it relates to an educational aspect of their chemistry, chemical engineering, or chemical technology studies. Six (6) awards [valued at $200 each in 2005] will be available annually; one award will be offered to each of the four (4) Canadian Society of Chemistry (CSC) undergraduate regional conferences, one award to the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) annual conference student programme, and one award to the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology (CSCT) student symposium. The award for the Atlantic Undergraduate Student Conference will be named the "Murray Brooker Award," in the memory of Dr. Murray Brooker. These awards are administered by the Chair of the Chemical Education Division, Noel George. Contact CIC National Office, Ann Campbell for more information.
